My name is Virginia Cheung, and I’m running for School Board.
I’m a single mother and an early childhood educator. As a former director who served for over seven years at Wu Yee Children’s Services, San Francisco’s largest Head Start provider serving children ages 0 to 5, I championed the well-being of children and families.
I know firsthand how important public schools are, from cradle to career. My life has been shaped by public education as a mother of a fourth grader and as the daughter of refugees.
As a young child, I learned early to hide. I was mute at school. I remember my first day of kindergarten, standing at the bus stop crying. I didn’t know anyone, and I spoke no English. A teacher noticed. She took my hand and rode with me to school.
Because she saw me that day, I became the first in my family to graduate from college. For years, I thought I was simply lucky to receive help. Now, as a public school parent, I know better: a child’s future should never depend on luck.
Too many children, including language learners, BIPOC students, and students with disabilities, are still denied the opportunity to succeed, even in one of the richest cities in the world. Every child deserves to succeed, to be safe, seen, valued, and heard. Every child deserves a voice.
A teacher helped me find my voice. Now I’m fighting for every child to find theirs.
Together with our students, families, and educators, we can ensure the excellent public schools every child deserves.
